Good uses for YouTube to MP3
- Lectures and lessons you want to listen to on a commute.
- Podcasts and interviews that are published on YouTube with the creator's permission to download.
- Your own videos, when you need the voice-over or music track for editing.
- Creative Commons audio, such as royalty-free music and sound effects published for reuse.
128 or 320 kbps?
YouTube's own audio is typically around 128–160 kbps in the AAC or Opus format. Converting it to a 320 kbps MP3 keeps as much of that sound as possible, but it can't add detail that isn't there. For speech, 128 kbps sounds the same and takes a third of the space.
| Bitrate | Best for | Size per minute |
|---|---|---|
| 128 kbps | Speech, podcasts, lectures | ~1 MB |
| 320 kbps | Music you have the right to keep | ~2.4 MB |
A note about music
Most songs on YouTube are owned by record labels and published under licences that do not allow downloads. Using a converter to build a music collection from YouTube is not allowed by YouTube's terms and can infringe copyright. If you want offline music, use a service that licenses it for offline listening. If you need the full video instead of the sound, go back to YouTube video to MP4.
Please only download content you own, have permission to use, or that is licensed for reuse. See our terms and copyright policy.
