4K on YouTube uses newer codecs
YouTube streams 1440p and 2160p (4K) only in the VP9 and AV1 codecs — there is no H.264 version above 1080p. To keep the file as an MP4, our 4K downloads use AV1 video inside an MP4 container, with AAC audio. The picture is exactly what YouTube streams at 4K; we don't re-encode it.
Which devices can play an AV1 4K MP4?
| Device or app | AV1 playback |
|---|---|
| iPhone 15 Pro and newer, iPads and Macs with M3 or later | Yes, built in |
| Recent Android phones | Usually yes |
| Windows 10/11 | Yes, after installing the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store |
| VLC media player (any platform) | Yes |
| Chrome, Edge and Firefox (current versions) | Yes |
| Older phones, many smart TVs and older editing software | Often no |
If you're not sure, download the 1080p version — it uses H.264 and plays everywhere.
How to download a YouTube video in 4K
- Copy the YouTube link.
- Paste it above. 2160p (4K) is already selected on this page.
- Tap Convert to MP4 and wait. 4K takes longer than 1080p because the files are much bigger and the video and audio streams have to be joined.
- Tap Download MP4.
If the video wasn't uploaded in 4K, you get the highest resolution available. Look for 2160p under the gear icon in the YouTube player to check before you start.
Is 4K worth it?
4K is worth it on a large 4K TV or monitor, or when you need to crop and zoom in a video editor. On a phone screen, most people can't see a difference between 1080p and 4K, and the 4K file can be four times bigger. For long videos, 4K files can run past a gigabyte, so make sure you have the space.
